The War Doctor is a previously unseen incarnation of the Doctor from the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. He existed between the Eighth and Ninth Doctors, choosing to forgo the title of "Doctor" due to his actions in the Time War.
Faced with the devastating realities of the war against the Daleks, the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann), chose to take up arms to end the conflict and save the universe. He used a potion to force a regeneration into a warrior, erasing the Doctor's personality and compassion.
The War Doctor's first appearance was in the mini-episode "The Night of the Doctor" (2013), but he was fully introduced in the 50th anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor" (2013), portrayed by actor John Hurt. This version of the Time Lord was a battle-hardened soldier, haunted by the decisions he made during the war, including the use of the Moment, a weapon of mass destruction.
